Why certain things set you off (and how to fix it)

Triggers Be Gone!

Ever get hit with a negative reaction that came out of nowhere?

Someone uses that sharp tone. A client questions your price. Your partner goes silent mid-conversation. A colleague challenges your idea in front of others. No reply to your message for hours.

They roll their eyes. They interrupt you. They say “we need to talk.” They leave you on read. They give you that look.

Then — click.

You feel Angry or Hurt. Defensive. Anxious. Rejected Frustrated.

It feels automatic. Instant.

But right before the feeling hits, your mind slaps a meaning onto it:

“They don’t respect me.” “She’s pissed at me.” “They think I’m overpriced.” “He doesn’t care about me.” “I’ve screwed this up.” “I’m not good enough."

That meaning is the real trigger.

And let’s be clear: It’s rarely just about this moment.

That tone. That eye-roll. That silence. That interruption. Those exact words. They’re lighting up older stuff — repressed negative emotions and limiting beliefs that carry the same charge.

A sharp voice that once meant you were in trouble. A stare that once meant you weren’t enough. “I need to think about it” that once meant rejection. A price pushback that hits “I’m not worth it.” An eye-roll that once meant you were stupid.

The present event is just the trigger activating those repressed negative emotions and limiting core beliefs.

So next time it hits, stop asking the unresourceful question: “Why do I feel like this?”

Ask this question instead:

What just happened — and what did I make it mean? What is the root cause of this emotion or limiting belief? It’s the older material that just got activated.

See the story. See the roots. Then you get actual choice. Sometimes just seeing it will neutralize the reaction.

If not, the processes from my Power Switch SystemTM will zap them quickly so you can be trigger-proof no matter what is going on around you.

You can’t always stop people from pressing your buttons. But you can get rid of the buttons.

That’s where real freedom starts.

With Love and Support,

Mary
